I. Call to Order/Welcome: The meeting was called to order at 7:06pm in the Hollywood School Library. The PTA board members in attendance were Jennifer Perry (President), Nancy Bitzer (1st Vice President), Sue Gersch (2nd Vice President), Kristen Didio (Treasurer) and Suzy Higgins (Corresponding Secretary). Amy Lodolce (Recording Secretary) was absent.

II. Review of the Minutes: The minutes from the March 8, 2012, PTA meeting were reviewed and approved with corrections noted in Teacher News and School News.
III. Treasurer’s Report – presented by Kristen Didio: The profit and loss statement was reviewed for March 1, 2012, through March 31, 2012, activity. No notable income was received. The floor requested an analysis of budgeted versus actual expenses for this school year. Kristen indicated we are in the black for the 2011-2012 year-to-date PTA budget.
IV. Corresponding Secretary’s Report – presented by Suzy Higgins:
Birthdays cards sent – Barbara Johnson
Thank you notes received – Spirios Family for donation, Mrs. Barhorst for recognition at Founder’s Day and the Riverside Public Library.
IV. President’s Report – presented by Jennifer Perry:
* Satellite Kindergarten Study Group – District 96 is requesting a parent/guardian volunteer from Hollywood school participate in a satellite Kindergarten study group. The group will evaluate am/pm kindergarten options at Hollywood and Ames. The time commitment is minor with the group expected to meet twice a month starting at the end of April. Jennifer Perry will send out the information via Feedblitz to enlist a Hollywood parent/guardian volunteer.
* RAIN (Riverside Area Inclusion Network) – Mary Komperda of RAIN is looking for another Hollywood parent/guardian volunteer. RAIN is a committee of parents/guardians interested in improving the school/community experience of special needs children.
* Global Connections – Lisa Gaynor, School Board Member, is looking for a Hollywood parent/guardian and a teacher volunteer to serve as Hollywood point persons for the Global Connections database. Global Connections is a central database that houses contact information throughout the world. The goal of the database is to allow students the ability to reach out to others worldwide and discuss given subject units. The point person would be responsible for implementing and maintaining the database of Hollywood contacts.

V. Teacher News – presented by Mrs. Tasman:
* ECE is classifying and sorting animals.
* Kindergarten is eagerly awaiting their chicken egg hatchlings. The chicks are expected at the end of April/beginning of May. They are also turning The Very Hungry Caterpillar into stories about Very Hungry Kindergarteners. They are learning addition and subtraction.
• 1st grade is analyzing how much they have grown and changed from infancy. They are also growing live plants (basil) and continuing their studies in addition and subtraction.
• 2nd grade is learning about whole and partial fractions. They are working with Ms. Levin on social stories such as being a good friend.
• 3rd grade is composing their “how-to” compositions and performing the demonstrations in class. They are also creating maps detailing specific journeys and including graphics in the map.
• 4th grade is writing stress essays using Mugsy’s essay as an example. They also made stress balls in class. They are learning about longitude and latitude.
• 5th grade is comparing and contrasting amphibians and reptiles. They are learning about places, people and/or regions of Africa. They continue to work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and are finding the area of various shapes.

VII. District/School News – presented by Principal Keller:
The Artist in Residency, “A Child’s Voice” was a great success with author/poet Bill Buczinsky! Mr. Buczinsky provided each class with two workshops as well as a teacher workshop during his short time with Hollywood. We are exploring the possibility of a four-week residency in April 2013 with Striding Lion’s Dance Theater Company (music, dance and theater). The residency has not been finalized yet. We are working with the PTA and applying for various grants to help fund the residency.
On April 13, 2012, we are celebrating our Young Author Books. The Hollywood Writer’s Theatre Troop, an ad-hoc parent/guardian group, will perform select student writings. The troop will perform pieces from the writings of Cole Plepel, Ben Gersch and Sophia Bowie. After the troop performs the pieces, students will split into cross-level groups and will be able to share their stories within that structure. The event is to further the goal of writing for purpose and audience.
On April 26, 2012, we will have our Open House from 7-8pm. Please bring your children to the Open House so you can revel in their achievements during the 2011-2012 school year.
As a reminder, District 96 grade schools will undertake capital renovations. Ames, Central and Hauser will be impacted first. Hollywood will be impacted by the renovations that occur at the other schools. Hollywood’s gym will house the district’s technology. At a minimum, this will impact the use of the gym during the last week of school. It is possible the gym may be occupied sooner, but not likely any earlier than the last week of May. We are identifying alternate accommodations for lunch, gym, Field Day and the Awards Day ceremony. Specifically, we will use the RB auditorium for Awards Day and the RB Field House for Field Day.
Hollywood is scheduled for renovations in 2013. However, asbestos abatement will occur this July at Hollywood in the 4th grade classroom, 5th grade classroom, art room and music room.
VIII. Committee Reports:
Sock Hop Recap (presented by Suzy Higgins) – General feedback was positive about the sock hop and the “after school” concept. The Student Council enjoyed voting on the theme. The higher-graded students indicated it was too short and preferred the evening edition of the sock hop. Parent feedback indicated the roles and responsibilities of the chaperones need to be improved and clarified.
Hollywood Bowl (presented by Jen Perry/Kristen Didio) – Hollywood bowl fundraiser event is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 2pm – 5pm at Forest Lanes in Lyons. The event is designed to help fund the Striding Lion’s Dance Theater Company artist in residency. This event will be open to the whole family and will include two games of bowling (bowling shoes included) and a raffle. Raffle prizes include Chicago Cubs tickets, Extreme Trampoline, and several other prizes. We hope to raise $1,500 – $2,000 for the event.
2012-2013 Committee List (presented by Sue Gersch) – Returning committee chairs will be provided the right of first refusal for their respective committee in the 2012-2013 school year. Seven or eight committees are without committee chairs in the 2012-2013 school year. The Holiday Gift Shoppe and Field Day committees are in marked need of a committee chair or chairs.
Teacher Appreciation Week (presented by Sue Gersch) – May 7th through May 11th will be teacher appreciation week. Parents/guardians will be receiving e-mails from their respective room parents for the week’s events. The teacher luncheon will be provided by Home Run Inn Pizza at the Hollywood House. Parent volunteers are needed to supervise the playground, lunchroom, set-up, clean-up and provide office coverage.
PTA Board elections occurred and the following Hollywood parents were confirmed as the 2012-2013 PTA Board:
Sue Gersch, President Amy Lodolce, VP to the President/Co-President
Meg Boyle, 1st Vice President Bill Schlesser, 2nd Vice President
Kristen Didio, Treasurer Alice Enochs, Corresponding Secretary
Nancy Bitzer, Recording Secretary

Installation of the PTA officers will occur at the May 3, 2012, PTA meeting.

IX. Upcoming events:

Thursday January 12, 2012

I. Call to Order: the meeting was called to order at 7:03 pm in the Hollywood School library. The PTA board members in attendance were Jennifer Perry (President), Nancy Bitzer (1st Vice President), Susan Gersch (2nd Vice President), Kristen Didio (Treasurer), Amy Lodolce (Recording Secretary), and Suzy Higgins (Corresponding Secretary).

II. Welcome: Jennifer Perry welcomed everyone to the meeting.
III. Review of the Minutes: the minutes from the PTA meeting on December 8, 2011 were approved.
IV. Treasurer’s Report: Kristin Didio reviewed the profit and loss statement, details for the profit and loss, and reconciliation from December 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011. Of note, $151.97 was raised from the Pampered Chef fundraiser. We received 4 additional memberships in December.
V. Corresponding Secretary’s Report – December
a. Birthdays: Ms. Debra Kwilas (paraprofessional) and Mrs. Renee Lebegue (reading specialist)
b. Christmas card from Juan Calderun
c. Thank you notes received from:
i. Miss Keller and Miss Mrazek for the dinner provided for Parent Teacher conference night
ii. The Art to Remember program contact Ester Woschotz
iii. Mrs. Loulousis for the check and all the library volunteers
iv. 2nd grade for holiday gift shop
d. Sent a thank you note to Mr. Petton for donating his box tops

VI. President’s Report: No report; there was no parent leadership team meeting in December.
VII. District News: Miss Keller presented the district news. There is an assembly coming up from Mobile Ed Productions. This is a core curricular assembly to complement cultural arts residencies. The project is a mobile planetarium that will visit Hollywood on Wednesday February 1, 2012.
Read to the Stars program has been previously associated with an incentive to get a ticket to the Kane County Cougars game in the summer. Six Flags also offers an incentive program. Student council was offered the opportunity to choose, and they weighed the pros and cons of each program. Student council decided to go with the Read to Succeed Program from Six Flags this year. There is an additional form for the Six Flags program, which will be sent home via regular backpack.
Midyear assessments are ongoing including MAP testing for progress monitoring for students receiving response to intervention (RTI) services. and certain other students who the teachers feel need an additional assessment. All fifth graders are assessed, as well as students new to the district. In addition, teachers may also have select other students take the test if they feel as though it would be beneficial for the purpose of monitoring progress and adjusting instruction accordingly.
Fountas and Pinnell testing will occur next week to assess students’ instructional reading level. ACCESS testing will occur in January to assess English language proficiency for English Language Learners.
There was a question about CogAT testing and whether or not parents are given the results. Per Miss Keller, the results are sent home by request only. Midyear assessments are to further guide instructions.
We have a math specialist now; it is Miss Mrazek. She serves as a resource for other teachers at Hollywood. This is different from the reading specialist, in that services are not provided directly to the students.
Miss Mrazek, in her new role, shared the Everyday Mathematics website. This is a resource for parents and students. She gave a demonstration of the site, including an electronic student reference book. Students have access to all material – not just their own grade. Algorithms are also available on the site.
Students in third, fourth, and fifth grade need to explain their thinking when doing math problems. This is called “Explain your Brain”. The students are being taught multiple strategies to solve problems and then teach their peers. There is a large emphasis on writing as well.
VIII. School News
a. Kindergarten: word family snowman (words that rhyme), Dr. Martin Luther King discussions with a project for their own dream
b. First grade: studying the sky and designed and named their own constellations
c. Second grade: personal goals (social and academic), they created flip charts with their goals
d. Third grade: Skyped with their pen pals from Central and shared a family tradition since they are studying cultures, created presentations about different celebrations, working on expression and voice in their writing, piloting a National Geographic science program, Handwriting without Tears to learn cursive
e. Fourth grade: learning about starting a business, students created a business of their own, Mrs. Clarkson and Mr. Longo visited to help, also testing the National Geographic science curriculum, readers response journal
f. Fifth grade: finishing their Podcasts about travel in Europe; reading and discussing the novel Island: Book 1 by Gordon Korman. In math, students will be using their knowledge about fractions, decimals, and percents to gather data about other Hollywood students and use technology to present the information in a graphical way.
IX. Committee Reports
a. Spring fundraiser: Kristen provided follow-up information regarding the fundraiser at Flying Gym (parents night out). Drop your kids off for pizza and playing from 7 until 10 pm; $15 per kid and flying high will give us $7 per kid. May 18th and June 8th were the only dates open. Fifth grade games night is scheduled for May 18th, and June 8th is the last day of school. The dates for next year open in April. Flying High requires a $50 deposit. Nancy discussed having fifth grade game night at Flying High or cancelling the last game night in order to give the fundraiser a try. Parents would need to pre-register. Nancy will talk to the parents who handle fifth grade game night. We will put down a deposit and do a save the date email for May 18th.
b. Bowling fundraiser – Jen Perry did some research at Tivoli and Forest Lanes. Forest Lanes on 47th is more economical. They are open in April and May at this point (Saturday and Sunday afternoons). We can bring in our own food if we have 50 people. The price at Forest Lanes is $5 per person for shoes and 2 games. This is cost; we would need to discuss how we can make a profit. Sock hop was scheduled for April 20th, but we need a new chair. There was discussion about having the bowling fundraiser on April 21st in lieu of the sock hop. Jen Perry will ask Courtney Erb to help with the raffle. Sue Gersch suggested working in conjunction with fourth grade parents who will be requesting items for the annual Bookler Buck auction. Miss Keller suggested involving the staff – they may be willing to donate time. John Plepel suggested allowing the kids to earn raffle ticket. The group decided on 2-5 pm. The appeal letter will need to focus on the theater residency so the fundraising goal is clear.
c. Nominating committee: The PTA board selected Jennifer Perry to serve as the representative from the board to the nominating committee. Tim Leimberer and Elizabeth Fragoso Dvoark were elected to serve from the general membership, and Elizabeth will chair the committee. John Plepel was elected as the alternate member.
d. Announcements: the following are upcoming events at Hollywood School
i. 1/23, 1/30 & 2/6 Fun Lunch
ii. 1/16 No School Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
iii. 1/17 Board of Education Meeting at Hauser 7:30 pm
v. 2/3 Market Day orders are due
vi. 2/8 Market Day pick-up
vii. 2/9 Founders Day 6 pm; brief PTA Meeting to follow dinner

X. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 pm.

Respectfully submitted,

Amy E. Lodolce
Recording Secretary
