The new plants were picked on the advice of Shawn Sinn, landscape architect and former Hollywood parent, and were voted on by all Hollywood students earlier in the year. Mr. Sinn also worked with all Hollywood students during the creation of the rain garden several years ago.
In addition, we found that one section of the garden in particular was overrun with a square-stemmed weed. The kids pulled out several gardening bags worth of the weed (and got popsicles for the hard work).
Look for the garden to start having blooming flowers very soon. Thank you to Mr. Sinn for coming in to help update the garden.

Here are two opportunities for your kids to attend the new Xtreme Bugs exhibit for free and allow them to be a part of a morning newscast.

1) This Wednesday, May 23 at 7 a.m. with WGN News
2) Friday, May 25, from 5 to 7 a.m.

WLS-TV/Channel 7 will be filming live at Brookfield Zoo’s Xtreme BUGS exhibit on Friday, May 25, from 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. and the zoo’s PR Department is in need of about 10 to 15 kids to be part of the early morning fun. If you have children and wouldn’t mind getting them up early that day, the zoo would love to have them be part of the morning newscasts and interact with the TV host, Roz Varon

During the live remote there will be hits every 10 minutes or so for traffic reports, but there will be two to four longer segments during the broadcast when Roz interacts with the kids.

The station will be filming both the animatronic portion and in the live bug section of the exhibit, where will have cockroach races and a chef cooking up some tasty treats with bugs.
