Dear District 96 Parents :

As Summer approaches we all look forward to time away from the “routine” and hopefully some pleasant warm weather. We’d like to extend an invitation to all parents and their children with IEP/504s to connect over the summer break and learn more about R.A.I.N and the many programs we have to help each other in navigating the special education road. We are looking to grow R.A.I.N into a phenomenal network of parents and students dedicated to our mission of awareness, education, support, networking, and acceptance of students with learning differences.

We’ll have many great opportunities over summer to share our knowledge and work together. We hope you can find the time to bring your ideas and benefit from some of the many events we are planning for the summer:

June 15th Sensory Modulation and Ideas for the Summer with Speaker Christy Walloc, Doctor of Occupational Therapy, Program Specialist at Rush University Medical Center – Riverside Library Meeting Room 6:30pm

July 20th Riverside Library 6:30pm Topic: Preparing for your IEP/504

End of August (date TBD) Back to School Picnic

Recognizing that summer is a busy time for all if you can’t make it to any of the above events we’d still love to hear from you, and know what topics are of interest for future discussions and events. Please send us an email with your information as we’d like to gather a parent directory for R.A.I.N in an effort to effectively communicate our events and plans to the parents of children with IEPs and 504 plans. Have a great summer and we hope to see you in August for a picnic where we can all gear up for the 2011-2012 school year! To share your information and receive future directed communications please email mylaf@prodigy.net or call Mary Komperda at 708-447-8648. Thank you for your interest.

April 26 from 7p-9p

Ames Gymnasium

for Adults Only

Ames PTA is hosting an important event: A viewing of Race to Nowhere. Race to Nowhere is a documentary that provides a unique and eye-opening look into education and parenting as it exists today. This documentary has received rave reviews and has resulted in large attendance at many school-sponsored screenings. This is a unique opportunity for our community to come together to view this important movie and to engage in a discussion on these topics.

Tickets: $10 in advance/$15 at door

Tickets can be purchased online at: rtnafamesschool.eventbrite.com

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of young people across the country who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and worried that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what’s best for their kids, Race to Nowhere points to the silent epidemic in our schools: cheating has become commonplace, students have become disengaged, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. Race to Nowhere is a call to mobilize families, educators, and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens.

The following was posted on the Hauser PTO website this past Tuesday, December 7, 2010.

Parents & others driving through the Hauser school zone should be aware of the following:

The Riverside Police Department is continuing with intensified enforcement of traffic laws. Since January 1, 2010, the use of cellular telephones within school and construction zones has been prohibited. Today the Riverside Police Department saturated the school zone around Central and Hauser Schools. One hour of intensified enforcement within this area led to a total of 8 citations. The department also arrested one individual for Driving with a Revoked License.

The department absolutely agrees that our children’s safety is first and foremost. Surprisingly, the vast majority of the drivers stated that they were not aware of the law. When the law was enacted January 1 of this year, the State of Illinois along with the Illinois Department of Transportation placed educational commercials on television and the press was also involved. The bottom line here is: Drivers should not be distracted with cellular telephones while driving around children.

The Riverside Police Department can assure the community that this type of intensified enforcement will continue throughout the Village. The goal is to slow everyone down and keep everyone safe from harm.

Chief Tom Weitzel stated: “This type of enforcement program is a direct result of working with our partners at District 96 and parents of students who attend District 96 schools. The department has had numerous complaints of distracted drivers picking up children in the school zones on Woodside Road. Enforcement will continue periodically through the end of 2010 and into 2011?.
