RBHS Proposed Parking Lot; Meeting Dates

Hello Hollywood Families,

If you are concerned about the Riverside-Brookfield High School proposed parking lot immediately adjacent to Hollywood Elementary (paving over the tennis courts and the green lot for parking), there are two meetings on Tuesday evening where public comments are encouraged.

1. District 208 Board of Education Committee of the Whole, held in Room 201 at RBHS; Tuesday, May 27. The meeting starts at 7:00 and you need to sign your name on the sheet by the entrance for public comments.

2. Village of Brookfield Public Safety Committee Meeting at 5:00; Brookfield Village Hall

There is also a Village of Brookfield Village Board and Committee of the Whole at 6:30; Brookfield Village Hall but the Agenda indicates that public comments on this subject are not permitted (although I am double-checking that). Please be aware that the Village of Brookfield has not yet been officially approached by District 208 and that District 208 is or will be working through West 40 on this project. The Village government, however, should be made aware of what residents think to make informed decisions regarding student and child safety, traffic onto neighborhood streets, property values, and flooding issues.

Please also be aware that beginning next school year, Hollywood will be home to the District 96’s expanded preschool program. This will increase car traffic to the school, with an anticipated additional 40 preschool-age students from throughout District 96.

A District 96 Board of Education member asked why no one from the Hollywood area showed up to speak at their meeting last week. At the District 208 Board of Education meeting two weeks ago, several Hollywood residents and some others spoke out against the proposal, but more are needed to both show up and to write letters.

Thank you,
Martha Carlson

Public comment is only limited for the first meeting of the night, the Village Board meeting.  However at the very end of the second meeting, the Committee of the Whole, anyone can get up and speak about anything.  The agenda can be found on page 116 of the packet for the meeting on Tuesday, May 27.

Water Polo at RBHS Summer Sports Camp

Summer Sports Camp AT RBHS Now Includes Summer Water Polo for Boys and Girls Entering 6th, 7th, 8th Grades.

Looking for a sport that combines teamwork, physicality, fun, and physical challenges? Water Polo is the sport for you! This year, for just the second time ever, the RBHS Summer Water Polo league, which includes practices and games, is open to kids entering and in middle school. This means current 5th graders are eligible. The water polo teams at RBHS are popular with girls (33 kids on the team this year) and boys (20 kids) and since it is a difficult sport to find around here, this is a great opportunity to expose your children to something new.

The cost is $75 and the information can be found on the RBHS website at under Summer Athletic Offerings to the left of your screen.

RBHS Proposed Parking Lot

I am sure most of you have either read about or heard about the 130-space parking lot RB is proposing to be built on the north side of Hollywood School.

On Thursday, May 1st, I spoke with Dr. Skinkis, the Superintendent at RB.  He reiterated that it is first of many proposals and he plans to hold several community meetings to obtain feedback.

In addition, I communicated with Dr. Sharma-Lewis via email.  She is working with the D96 BOE to add discussion of the proposal to an upcoming board meeting.

I will continue to share any information as I receive it.  In the interim, attached is a list of names and numbers of individuals to contact (PDF) to express your opinion of the proposal.  We cannot afford to compromise our children’s safety.

Please let your voice be heard.

Thank you,

Sue Gersch
PTA President

Krispy Kreme Donuts Delivered to Your Door – Sat. April 26

Former Hollywood student and RBHS Junior Lucia Adami is taking part in the RBHS water polo team’s fundraising effort to pay for IHSA-mandated improved caps and suits. The team is selling boxes of a dozen Krispy Kreme glazed donuts for $8/box (less than the price you pay at the store). They will be picked up freshly baked on the morning of April 26th and delivered either that morning (by team parents) or soon after noon by the girls themselves (you can request what delivery works for you) once they finish the RBHS Day of Service work assignment.

This team is full of girls who do good throughout the school and community, and many maintain high spots on the honor roll. Seniors are going to such schools as Case Western and New York University. They are hoping for your support!

Please contact Lucia Adami at 708-387-1308 or if you’d like to order a box from this 3-year Varsity player who’s also on the A-Honor Roll.  Payment in advance is appreciated.
